Iowa Real Estate Licensing Requirements

This licensing information is designed to provide a summary of the minimum education requirements established by the Iowa Real Estate Commission. We recommend you contact the Iowa Real Estate Commission for more detailed information or changes.

Iowa Real Estate Salesperson Pre-License Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age – no residency or citizenship requirement
  • Must be sponsored by broker after they pass the exam; cannot apply for an inactive license
  • Complete the 60-hour pre-license course from an approved provider
  • In addition to the 60-hour pre-licensing salesperson course, all persons applying for a salesperson license must show evidence that the following three courses have been completed: • 12-hours Buying Practices • 12-hours Listing Practices • 12-hours Developing Professionalism and Ethical Practices
  • Successfully pass the state and national portions of the examination; see Iowa real estate license exam prep
  • Undergo a criminal history and background investigation
  • Obtain errors and omissions insurance
  • Submit an application and appropriate fees

Iowa Real Estate Broker Pre-License Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age – no residency or citizenship requirement
  • A broker applicant must have 24 months of active salesperson experience within the preceding 24 months of passing the examinations
  • Complete 72 hours of broker pre-license education within the preceding 24 months of passing the examinations
  • Successfully pass the state and national portions of the examination; see Iowa real estate license exam prep
  • Undergo a criminal history and background investigation Include current salesperson wall license with the application
  • Provide verification of current errors and omissions insurance
  • Include current salesperson wall license with the application
  • Brokers who have never renewed as a salesperson must provide documentation of attendance of the following three courses: 12 hours Buying Practices, 12 hours Listing Practices and 12 hours Developing Professionalism and Ethical Practices (not applicable to salespersons originally licensed after December 31, 2008).

Iowa Real Estate License Continuing Education Requirements

  • All salespersons and brokers must complete the following prior to December 31st of their renewal year if renewing active: • 8 hours Law Update • 4 hours Ethics • 24 hours Commission approved Electives
  • Up to 24 hours may be taken by correspondence/home study during each three year renewal period
  • During each three year renewal period a course may be taken for credit only once. A course may be repeated for credit ONLY if the course numbers and instructors are different.
  • All brokers and salespersons can, at any time between July 1 and December 31 of the year of renewal, take and pass the appropriate licensing exam instead of completing the required continuing education. You must contact the Commission to obtain an authorization letter (waiver) for admittance to take the exam.
