Illinois Real Estate Licensing Requirements

This licensing information is designed to provide a summary of the minimum education requirements established by the Illinois Real Estate Division. We recommend you contact the Illinois Real Estate Division for more detailed information or changes.

Illinois Real Estate Broker Pre-License Requirements

  • Be at least 21 years old or 18 years old
  • Have graduated from high school or obtained the equivalent of a high school degree
  • Must complete 90 hours of pre-license education, 15 of which must be the Applied Real Estate Principles course (classroom or webinar) and 30 hours of post-license education
  • Pass a course and state final exams; see Illinois real estate license exam prep
  • Submit application and associated fees

Illinois Real Estate Managing Broker Pre-License Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years old Submit application and associated fees
  • Also effective May 1, 2011 all new licensees who require managerial privileges are required to earn a Managing Broker license. This new license has the same privileges as the former Broker license, but has additional education requirements.
  • Complete the required additional education of 45 credit hours
  • Pass all course and state final exams; see Illinois real estate license exam prep
  • Submit application and associated fees

Illinois Real Estate License Continuing Education Requirements

  • Brokers are required to complete 12 hours of continuing education by April 30th even years
  • The hours include 6 hours of electives and the 3 hour Core A course and 3 hour Core B Course
  • Managing Brokers are required to complete 24 hours of continuing education by April 30th odd years
  • These hours include 3 hours Core A, 3 hours Core B, 6 hours electives and 12 hours Broker Management course
