In your journey to become a real estate professional, the real estate exam is a hurdle that can’t be avoided. Passing the real estate exam is imperative to your success. Thankfully, there are some pretty common mistakes that you can avoid to ensure that you’re ready to go on test day.

Whether you’ve been studying on your own or following an online real estate license exam prep plan, take a look at some of the common mistakes that real estate hopefuls often make – and how to avoid them – so you can put your best foot forward.

Mistake #1: Waiting Until the Last Minute to Study for Your Real Estate License Exam

We won’t drill you on the importance of studying for the real estate license exam in advance. We’re sure you understand the importance of knowing the material and committing it to memory. However, there are a few things you’ll need to do a couple of days in advance of test day to quell stress and anxiety.

Don’t wait until the last minute to gather all the tools and documents you’ll need on test day. Registration documents, an approved calculator, identification, and other required items should be gathered in advance. Even something as simple as filling up your gas tank the night before the exam can save you time, and eliminate yet another thing to worry about on the day of the exam.

Mistake #2: Not Understanding Real Estate License Exam Procedures

With some states only offering the real estate exam a few times a year, it would be disappointing to miss your opportunity – or delay your career launch – because you missed the deadline to apply, or you failed to understand what is required of you.

Make sure you research the real estate license exam requirements in your state, that you understand the requirements, and that you know the exact location and time of your exam. If you are unfamiliar with the area, consider visiting the location the day before to avoid running late or getting lost on your exam date.

Mistake #3: Not Researching Grading Procedures

We recommend that you also research the grading procedure for your state. Do you know what score you need to pass, how each section is broken down, or how much time you have to take the test? Do you know if it’s better to leave a question blank or answer it incorrectly? These small details can make a big difference on test day.

Also, consider researching what happens if you don’t pass your real estate license exam. How long do you have to wait before retaking it and how many times can you retake the exam? Though we know you’ll do great, we understand that life throws things at you when you least expect it – and you’ll want to be prepared. Mistake #4: Not Understanding the Format

Most state’s real estate license exams are multiple choice and consist of 100-150 questions, which are broken down into two sections. The longer portion covers general real estate principals and the other covers questions specific to your state’s licensing laws. Mistake #5: Studying Alone

For most of us, it’s probably been years since we’ve had to take a test, especially one as unique as the real estate exam. It’s normal if you don’t feel up-to-speed when it comes to studying, and figuring out an action plan to learn the material along can be challenging.

A real estate license exam prep program is often useful to help keep you on track, the help you digest the information, and to provide insight into the areas of the real estate exam that are often difficult or troubling for test takers.
